This week, New York State Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the creation of the New York (NY) Forward ReOpening Advisory Board to help guide the state’s re-opening strategy. The very diverse advisory board consists of more than 100 business and community leaders, which also include those who represent Caribbean-American New Yorkers and Caribbean American-owned businesses.
New York Caribbean Community Hit Hard by COVID-19
Thus far, New York has been the hardest hit state in the U.S., with over 300,000 COVID-19 cases and 18,321 deaths. As the world and Americans try to get a handle of the global economic devastation caused by COVID-19 pandemic, Gov. Cuomo has enlisted the helped of industry heavy hitters from major industries including healthcare, finance, real estate, construction, hospitality, restaurants, and more. As discussed on the “IN MY HEAD with Jay Blessed” podcast, for the entire month of April, the focus has been on how COVID-19 is affecting the lives of Caribbean people, businesses, and communities. Therefore, it is necessary to see Caribbean people represented on the NY Reopening Advisory Board.
