Miss Jamaica “Genna Bounces” At Miss World 2018 Finals, Mexico Takes Crown!

A historic crowning for Vanessa Ponce de Leon who become the first Mexican queen to be win the Miss World title.

Many in the Caribbean were cheering on Jamaica’s bronzed beauty Kadijah Robinson, however, though she was not able to bring home a 4th Miss World title for the Caribbean island, she was one of the 5 finalists.

Jamaica’s Minister of Culture, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia Grange, congratulated Robinson via press release stating, “It was an amazing feat securing a top five finish and gaining the Miss World Caribbean title, while being a wonderful exponent of our culture….Robinson’s emphatic top five finish and the dance video have ignited widespread praise from Jamaicans across the Diaspora who have commended the daughter of Black River, St Elizabeth on her performance.”

The 2018 pageant took place in the Sanya City Arena in Sanya, China. The 26-year-old winner beat 117 other contestants, including runner up Miss Thailand Nicolene Limsnukan, Miss Uganda Quiin Abenakyo, who placed third. Other finalists from Belarus, France, Scotland, Jamaica, Martinique, Mexico, Panama, Mauritius, Uganda, Nepal, New Zealand and Thailand.

“I can’t believe it, I really can’t believe it,” the newly crowned Miss World 2018 said backstage. “And I think all the girls deserved it. I am proud to represent all of them. I will do as much as I can in the time I have got. Thank you so much, everyone.”

The new Miss World, Vanessa Ponce de Leon, has a degree in International Business and has worked as a model and TV host. She is also involved in charity work, and serves on the board of directors of a rehab center for girls and volunteers for Migrantes en el Camino and is also a speaker for the National Youth Institute.

The Miss World pageant was created in Britain in 1951 and is the oldest surviving major international beauty contest. Jamaica has won the title three times – Carole Joan Crawford in 1943, Cindy Breakspeare in 1954 and Lisa Hanna in 1975.
