Charlotte Nebres, an 11 year old student at the School of American Ballet became NYC Ballet’s first black nutcracker lead. She is of Trini descent!

It’s 2019 and we are still having firsts for black faces in certain spaces. Should we rejoice for the delayed inclusion of the “chosen ONES” or should we just chalk it up to America just choosing to stay “American?”

No matter your perspective, we are thrilled to join in the celebration as 11-year-old Charlotte Nebres, a student at the School of American Ballet, who danced her way into ballet history as New York City Ballet’s first black Marie, the young heroine of the show that dates back to 1954, according to The New York Times.

Nebres is breaking barriers as the star of the New York City Ballet’s holiday production of George Balanchine’s “The Nutcracker.”

It was just four years ago that Misty Copeland became the first African American woman to be promoted to principal dancer in the American Ballet Theatre’s 75-year history.

Charlotte’s mom is Trinidadian, while her father is Filipino.

Charlotte, congratulations on your trailblazing role of Marie. Big up to your parents for helping you pursue your dreams! WE SALUTE YOU!
