Selah Marley is using her voice as powerfully as her mother Lauryn Hill, except it’s not through song but through intimate conversations on her social media platform. Since releasing two Instagram live videos detailing the private life of her famous family, her father Rohan Marley left her a public response.

In a public move to atone for his absence in Selah’s life, Rohan Marley commented on her “Clarity” video, writing: “I LOVE YOU MY LIONESS. The truth might be an offense but it’s not a sin ..I LOVE YOU. I totally understand what you mean ..ABBA”

To be honest, when I saw that comment, I felt sad.

Though Rohan’s actions may not have always been perfect, his words in that moment to Selah were profoundly pure.

Rohan’s public declaration of love for his daughter is what many daughters and fathers needed to witness.

His admission that her truth – though hurtful – he will not despise; and his closing of giving her a safe space to express her truth because he understood…because he loves her…so deep!

Rohan Marley response to Selah

When was the last time your father told you he loved you?

I wasn’t melancholy because he wrote this comment. I just felt a pang of sadness because many of us wished our fathers could own their wrongs, right their shit and publicly and honestly declare their unabashed love for their children.

A verbal apology is the right start towards healing. A public apology is many steps in the right direction. Consistent action to back up that apology is healing to a generation.

If more parents understood the humility behind owning their wrongs and failures to ensure their children and future generations experience life in a better way, we would heal our communities.

And for those who might say, he didn’t say “sorry” or “I apologize” so it’s not a real apology. Do you know men? Shit…do you know older Caribbean men? And also, do you have any idea what was said in private?

Was Bob Marley Present For All Of His Children?

Marley blood is one of the world’s most highly regarded black families – FULL OR DRAMA – yet abounding in love, I look forward to seeing Rohan heal the relationship with Selah and all of his children.

The world is watching this relationship closely.

Tremendous healing power lays in the hands of parents who take the time to actually listen to how their actions (and inactions) have caused their children deep trauma and pain. The real healing power is released when those parents then seek to fervently fix these sacred relationships.

Now is the time to #raisetherug on how mothers and fathers need to quickly fix their shit, instead of being so quick to blame and disown their children. So many parents are rushing to the grave, unsympathetically leaving behind emotional debts for their children to bear. This shit needs to stop…TODAY!

We have so much healing to do.
