Self-proclaimed Captain Jason Benn decided that he was above the law and that neither a global pandemic nor New York COVID restrictions would prevent him and friends from throwing a J’Ouvert fete in Brooklyn!

The novel coronavirus has halted millions of lives and businesses around the world. A casualty of the major loss being experienced by millions, is the temporary stop of gathering with friends at concerts and major events.

Brooklyn J’Ouvert Fete During Pandemic

Juxtaposed with the quantifiable loss of life, opting not to gather in large crowds should be a no brainer. Right?

To date, there have been a reported 23,695 deaths in New York City and 32,541 in New York State.

On July 11th, 2020, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that all large events requiring a city events permit will be canceled through September 30th, as New York City works to prioritize open spaces for public use. The City will not issue a permit for any event in a location that interferes with the Open Streets or Open Restaurants program. Permits will also be denied for all events larger than one block, stage/video events that require amplification, street fairs, and events in parks that may unreasonably diminish public use. The City will refund or defer fees paid in connection with a denied permit.

BREAKING: WIADCA Corruption Exposed

Even the West Indian Day Carnival Association had to scrap this year’s Labor Day celebration to adhere to the Mayor’s rules. WIADCA now prepares to bring its first ever virtual road Labor Day Parade experience.

But let’s get back to promoters, like Jason Benn, who are beyond obtaining a permit for an event, that obviously goes against city guidelines and certainly do not enforce social (or physical) distancing:

Scan the videos and see if you notice any of your friends and family engaging in this fuckery debauchery.

Fete is life! Right?

This is why hundreds of people will throw caution to the wind during these perilous times, and shameless promoters, who can’t think of other innovative ways to generate income, would rather put their patron’s lives at risk than cool off for a few months.

Herein also lies the age old problem of some thinking they are above the group and that mandated rules do not apply to them.

I figured I’ll post the video again, lest Jason Benn makes his page private or deletes the promotional video of his J’Ouvert during a pandemic!

The irresponsibility and blatant disrespect by promoters and patrons to the city’s rules will further hamper the already strained relationship Caribbean promoters have with the city of New York and the stigma attached to Caribbean people.

Ep. 15: “Preserving Caribbean Culture in NYC” (with Ray Martin)

Benn has already started advertising his next big event – OLE CUP! He has teamed up with Quincy Thorpe, better known as Young Maddy, of the $250,000 JFK Heist! This advertised SOLD OUT event is scheduled for Labor Day Sunday, September 6th – at an undisclosed location. The Eventbrite link has since been disabled.

I know many of y’all don’t give a fuck about anyone else but yourselves but I pray you consider the elders in your life; consider your children who are headed back to school next week; consider those who have underlying medical conditions…or maybe, just maybe, you might even want to consider your own safety.

But how about you consider your community and how the effects of a few can adversely hurt the entire group! I foresee more problems for Caribbean events in the future and you can thank fellas like Jason Benn!

We are in half time and flu season is coming…winter is coming…the next phase of this novel coronavirus is coming. BE WISE.

Who will be held accountable when something goes awry in the next fete or a fresh outbreak happens – the greedy promoters, the witless patrons or the community that knew and did nothing?

When will we as a community stop financially supporting promoters who hurt our people, and hold them accountable for misrepresenting and marketing danger as fun and culture?
