Calypso Rose To Be Honored With World Music Award

Living Caribbean Legend, Calypso Rose will receive The Sacem Grand Prix award for World Music, on December 10th, at Salle Pleye, France.

The Sacem Grand Prix celebrates outstanding work and individuals in songwriting, music publishing, humor and classical contemporary music. Every year, following a vote by the Board of Directors, the Sacem Grand Prix are awarded to authors, authors-directors, composers and music publishers who are members of Sacem.

The Calypso Queen of the World will be receiving the Grand Prize for World Music.

Born McCartha Linda Sandy-Lewis in Tobago in 1940, Calypso Rose is not only a National Treasure of Trinidad and Tobago but a world renowned performing artist and musical activist. According to her Wiki page, “she started writing songs at the age of 15; over the years, she has composed more than 800 songs and recorded more than 20 albums.”

T&T’s Minister of Community Development, Culture and the Arts, Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly, congratulated Calypso Rose on what she described as a remarkable achievement. “Calypso Rose, Calypso Queen of the World, continues to place Trinidad and Tobago on the international stage by taking calypso to all parts of the world. This accolade that is being bestowed on Calypso Rose is testament to not only how far our music can take us but also that age has no boundaries where love of music is concerned.”

Calypso Rose’s accolades are too numerous to list. The NY-based Caribbean icon has performed for royalty, heads of states and global dignitaries. She’s also a beloved icon in Europe (particularly France) and Africa, the recipient of many Humanitarian and Lifetime Achievement awards.

In July 2017, a Caribbean Airline’s Boeing 737 was named “Calypso Rose, Calypso Queen of the World” in honor of her being the first Soca artist to win the prestigious French Music Award, the “Album de Musique de Monde,” and for her contributions to the development of calypso and the culture of T&T.

She is a holder of a diplomatic passport with the inscription, Calypso Rose –“Cultural Icon of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago,” presented to her, this year, by Dr. Gadsby-Dolly.

Veteran Calypsonian De Fosto Dies At 64.

In July this year, Queen Rose received a special invitation to perform at The Mustique Company’s 50th anniversary party, where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were also in attendance.

Always working, Calypso Rose’s next performance takes place on Thursday November 15 at the Municipal Theater of Abbeville in France, then in London. on Saturday November 17, for the Windrush Show. Her last performance this year will be in France in December.
