This year’s International Soca Monarch (ISM) has been met with major changes, major announcements and high expectations.
Former Soca Monarch Fay-Ann Lyons-Alvarez is now the Chair of the event’s governing body, Caribbean Prestige Holdings. Reigning 3x consecutive winning Soca Monarch, Aaron “The Voice” St Louis, is not defending his 2018 title. The two categories of Power and Groovy have returned, which has seen varying entrants from around the region.
The semi-finals took place in Arima last Sunday. Here are the 8 finalists in each category…
GROOVY FINALISTS
Teddyson John – Vent
Swappi Party – Start
Blaxx – Gyal Owner
Mandella Links – Tombstone
Ricardo Drue – I Got You
V’ghn – Trouble In The Morning
Tim Tim and Rayzor – X Pose
Preedy – Lost and Found
POWER FINALISTS
Mr Killa – Run With It
Iwer – Blessings
Lil Natty and Thunder – Get In Your Section
Terri Lyons – Mad
Chingee – Rolling Stone
Granny – Jiggle It
Jo Jo – Start It
Mr Legz – Wining Challenge
In my personal opinion, both categories can easily see a non-Trinidadian win. While Blaxx’s “Gyal Owner” is a big hit, Teddyson John (St. Lucia) and V’ghn (Grenada) are the ones to watch for Groovy. Meanwhile, Grenada’s Mr. Killa has a monster crowd in “Run Wit It” but fellow countrymen, Lil Natty & Thunder can easily be crowned the Power champs.
The Grenadians are looking like they will be taking the titles this year!
The International Soca Monarch finals are scheduled to take place on Fantastic Friday, March 1st 2019. Will you be watching?
