Dr. Jean G. Joseph, CPA the recently installed President of the West Indian American Day Carnival Association, Inc. (WIADCA) has announced some of the plans for this year’s 52nd staging of the annual Festival that culminates with the famed Labor Day Carnival Parade on Eastern Parkway.

Speaking on behalf of the organization now in its 5th decade of operation, Dr. Joseph gave the assurance that the Board of Directors has been hard at work in crafting and carving a festival of world-class standard.

“Our focus this year is on safety and quality,” said Dr. Joseph who was elected as the new president on April 24th of this year. “We have been meeting with the relevant authorities in devising strategies to keep the parade on its sustained track record of safety. To help accomplish this we have implemented a public awareness campaign reminding both masqueraders and masses that preservation of our culture and our parade is the key. We continue to promote the idea that this is our culture and the parade is our stage, therefore, it is imperative that they are preserved for future generations.”

Additionally, much to the delight of paying patrons, WIADCA has put together a cast of headline performers from around the Caribbean. The formula of four nights of concerts at the massive Brooklyn Museum outdoor stage, and two street parades — one for children the other for adults — remains the same.

Along with her new board, Joseph has been infusing the organization with “new blood” particularly incorporating the ideas of younger people.

“We are in the process of establishing a youth arm of the organization to help move this agenda forward,” said Dr. Joseph.

At its April general election Dr. Joseph was elected as the 7th president in the life of the organization, the first being the incomparable Carlos Lezama who brought the carnival to Brooklyn in 1967 and served as its president until his retirement in 2001 due to ill health. Dr. Joseph, a Certified Public Accountant, and Dominican native brings her business acumen and years of experience in corporate America to the organization, in particular in the areas of internal control and marketing. The newly constituted Board of Directors include: Angela Sealy, Co-Chairperson; Valarie Katz McLeod, Co-Chairperson; Patricia Warwick, 2nd Vice President; Karen D. Williams, Treasurer; Cecille Ford, Board Secretary; and general board members Anne Rhea Smith, Deborah Benjamin, Leah Clark Brisard, Christine McLeod, Karen Crawford, Calvin Collin, Dr. Ionie Pierce, Michelle Gibbs and Michael Young Lao, Hon. Frank R. Seddio Esq., General Counsel, and Lucericia Messiah Esq.

Public support for WIADCA has been growing as evidenced by the increased number of visitors to its website and participation in the warm-up events which all form the synchronicity that gives the parade the distinction of being New York City’s biggest cultural festival.
