Sister Nancy Finally Getting Royalties For Bam Bam!

I only recently learned of Muma Nancy being robbed of 32 years of unpaid royalties and wanted to share with any of my readers, who might’ve also not known.

Check out this Billboard article by Ms. Pat Meschino, No Grammy, No Cry: Female Reggae & Dancehall Artists Talk Challenges and Victories which states: “While she didn’t receive payment for all 32 years, Nancy was compensated for the last 10 years of her song’s usage and she now owns 50 percent of the rights. In 2016 she quit her full time job as an accountant in a New Jersey bank to better facilitate an increasingly hectic performance schedule.”

According to Wikipedia: In 2014, Sister Nancy’s daughter pointed out that the song was playing on the TV in a Reebok commercial and thus she finally decided seek legal advice and guidance on properly obtaining rights to her own music. For 32 years, Sister Nancy did not receive any royalties for her song. At the end of the settlement she was unable to receive compensation for all 32 years of unpaid royalties, however, she did receive compensation for the last 10 years and then obtained 50% of the rights to her song “Bam Bam.”

“Bam Bam” has been sampled by Beyonce, Lauryn Hill, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Chris Brown, CL Smooth & Pete Rock, Kat DeLuna, Groove Armada, Logic and Lizzo.
