Preserving Caribbean West Indian Culture in NYC
SHARE THIS STORY:

A year ago, I produced and released an episode on my award-nominated Caribbean podcast, IN MY HEAD with Jay Blessed titled, Preserving Caribbean Culture in NYC.”

#HEADwithJB Episode #15, “Preserving Caribbean Culture in NYC” features Ray Martin, Associate Director of NYC’s Nightlife Industry and Community Relations.

Preserving West Indian / Caribbean Culture

Before COVID-19, before George Floyd protests and before my explosive story, I asked, “Are Caribbean people really viewed as problematic and violent? Are we our worst enemy? Why do we not own major venues and spaces in NYC? Does the NYPD have a list of people in the Caribbean community that they target? Are WIADCA, party promoters, artistes and businesses really serving the Caribbean community or themselves?”

There are some hard questions we must ask ourselves if we want to progress and preserve culture. If we were to be truly honest with ourselves, there are a host of important internal work that is immediately needed in our Caribbean community.

To all the real Caribbean cultural ambassadors and stalwarts of West Indian culture – THANK YOU!
