On Thursday, November 6th, Caribbean Film Academy, Third Horizon, Luminal Theater, in conjunction with BAM Cinemas, closed off the 2019 Caribbean Film Fest Series with a packed house for the Brooklyn premiere of Tina Charles’ debut film, “Charlie’s Records.”

Tina Charles is not only a decorated WNBA player, 2x Olympic champion and 6x All-Star athlete, but also the daughter of a Caribbean musical pioneer – Mr. Rawlston Charles.

“In 1967, Tobagonian immigrant Rawlston Charles sets foot on American soil with the dream of opening a record store and music label to support the genesis of Calypso and Soca music in Brooklyn, New York.”

Charlie’s Records took viewers down a nostalgic path to the origins of calypso and soca, delved deeper into Rawlston Charles the man, had the mature audience reliving the golden era of Carnival in New York and brought it to present, where this Caribbean legend now holds space at the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Caribbean blogger and podcaster, Jay Blessed moderated the Q&A with Charlie's Records owner, Rawlston Charles and his WNBA star daughter and film creator, Tina Charles at BAM Cinemas back in 2019.

The father of six, donned in his trademark flamboyance, joined his daughter for a post-screening talk-back, moderated by yours truly.

Rawlston Charles is the embodiment of the successful Caribbean immigrant story and Charlie’s Records is a must-see!
