Freak or not – I hate that WAP song by Cardi B and Megan The Stallion!

I don’t even like the video.

It’s not targeted to adults. With cameo appearances by Kylie and Normani – it’s targeted to teenage girls.

Celebs Contribute To The Over-Sexualization of Young Black Girls

In this digital age, adults have nothing anymore! There is no separation of adults vs children, especially when it comes to content, experiences and music. Everything is easily available. Can you imagine your girl child singing WAP? Or having the unmitigated gall to even hum it in your presence?

Reminds me of Lady Shabba’s Ram Ram! I would’ve gotten my ass lit afire but my little self was singing and humming – not even knowing the words or meaning of the song. I just knew it was rude, it was playing everywhere and the beat was sick! I was 9 years old when the song came out.

I am all for women empowerment but I am not for the over-sexualization of young girls, especially young black teen girls, who are already viciously viewed as women, from the time their pubescent bodies start coming into shape and form.

I hate the WAP song and video by Cardi and Mega Thee Stallion.

JAY’S THOUGHTS: Stop Posting Videos of Little Girls Wining!

I definitely don’t want to hear my daughter singing WAP! However, I am a realist, therefore, even with my great parenting, it’s inevitable that she will hear it and have salacious discussions with her little girlfriends about it.

So, tonight we shall have a conversation about the power of women and their WAP, the importance of abstinence and the grave need to preserve privacy in a digital space.

Human trafficking, sex trade and sex slaves are not far-fetched fictitious issues in a dystopian society. These vile and scary happenings are not easily digestable or tweetable scenes out of a Handmaid’s Tale episode. This shit is as real and as local and as RIGHT NOW, like Kiesha’s plight in Season 3 of The Chi!

Sex Traffickings True Victims: Why Are Our Black Girls / Women So Vulnerable?

With local R. Kellys, Jeffrey Epsteins and Harvey Weinsteins in our own neighborhoods – in our own families – we need to pay attention to the messages we send when it comes to young girls and sex.

There are many people who think every toxic shit is normal and everything is funny. However, we need more non-conforming individuals willing to stand and use their voices, even when it’s not the popular opinion.

Check out this young man checking his 22 year old male friend for having sex with a 17 year old below:

WAP is not just another example of how sex sells but how the powers that be use celebrities to sell sex to children and how black women (goddesses) are also used as pawns to effectively sell this messaging.

Just read The Jezebel Stereotype or Selling Sexy: Mainstream Hip Hop culture’s commodification of Black female sexuality.

With the instant success of WAP, we see how one song can add to the narrative of black women AND GIRLS being over-sexualized. Adding to the point that we are only seen as sex objects yet ignored as human beings – dismissed and forgotten when we are in pain, in need, traumatized, speak up and out, in the right, in advocacy for ourselves or when we are dead!

From Megan Thee Stallion to Breonna Taylor, Black Women’s Trauma Deserves Better Than Memes

I can honestly say I might hum or sing the chorus in the right moment. (I actually only heard the song ONCE but the WAP part IS INFECTIOUS!) WAP will surely slap in the right setting though but…NOT NOW, NOT TODAY, NOT IN FRONT OF OUR KIDS, AND NOT IN THIS CHAOTIC 2020!

There are so many more REAL ISSUES we should be pushing our attention to than Cardi B and Megan twerking on WAP!

The dichotomy between my thoughts and action are relatable though. You can be a super freak and a respectable woman. You can be sexually expressive and a great parent. You can also be sexually fluid (I am not!) yet still want your teenage child to be chaste and young adult children to practice healthy coitus.

You can empower them about the beauty of their bodies and power of their sexual energy but still police them (the teenage ones) on how to HEALTHILY use their sex organs and sexual energy.

We need to continue to educate our youth on the level of maturity and responsibility required for sexual engagement and the effects of sex.

How black women’s bodies are violated as soon as they enter school

This thought piece isn’t about respectability politics or policing the bodies of black women – this blog post is meant to PROTECT THE BODIES OF BLACK WOMEN!

As a grown ass woman, I might slap my WAP on a worthy man, in the privacy of my boudoir! However, I firmly believe that the contents of this song wasn’t meant for adults only or even to empower women like me. WAP is a device that seeks to promote promiscuity amongst our children, especially our young black girls!

Song lyrics, just like chants, can be affirming or destructive – if you’re not aware of the power of the spoken word.

I don’t like the damn song!

I said what I said.
